November 19, 1945- Harry Truman proposed a national health insurance plan to change the payment system for medical services. His primary suggestion for change, the “all-important difference: whether or not patients get the services they need would not depend on how much they can afford to pay at the time.”

July 30, 1965- Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare expansion of social security into law at the Truman Library- in honor of the man who began the push to provide medical care without regard to ability to pay. Johnson said it "all started really with the man from Independence".

Excerpt from Spring Newsletter:
Family Health Care just turned 19! For nineteen years we have been providing quality medical care to a very vulnerable population in Kansas City. Many things have changed through the years. AIDS patients are living longer and better through the chemistry of improved medications. Diabetic patients have many more options for treatment. Recent advances in cancer treatments allow patients with some cancers longer lives. Newly discovered diseases like Hepatitis C now have treatments. In short, we are able to do so much more for many patients.

In 1989 when we opened, some of these diseases required the best of our bedside manner as we could only hold the hands of the dying and offer comfort. Today, we are challenged to help them live longer and improve other aspects of their lives. Family Health Care has changed with the times, rather than just offering palliative care and counseling, we offer services like Fit-for-Life to help patients with exercise, diet and other life-style changes to help them life longer. Instead of working to ensure end-of-life comforts, we are providing instruction in reading and helping patients get their diplomas and work at job skills. In addition to the basics of health care FHC provides dental care, counseling and other important services to improve the lives of our patients.

Of all the changes at FHC and in our work through the years, one of the most important is the increasing and uplifting support from our donors. We are grateful for your continued support and for the fact that you tell your friends and family about our Family. Thanks!
